Tokaido: A Journey (DVD)
In 1832 Japanese artist Utagawa Hiroshige traveled from Edo (modern day Tokyo) to Kyoto along the Tokaido Road, sketching the 53 rest stations along his 300-mile journey.
From these sketches, the artist created a celebrated series of woodblock prints depicting the 53 stations. Belgian filmmaker Luc Cuyvers retraces Hiroshige’s journey in a documentary that explores the intersection of ancient and modern Japan.
